Inspiration and laughter

I’ve been in a bit of an inspirational slump lately. I have a long list of topics to write about, but I couldn’t seem to do them justice.

My wise friend Ivan told me to let go and write about whatever I want. And for weeks I have been wanting to write about Michelle Buteau. So, I’m going to indulge myself.

I first saw her in the TV show The First Wives Club and I immediately texted a friend and told her that there was a beautiful and amazing woman on my TV saying all the things I wish I could say.

Then I saw her in Survival of the Thickest which she stars in and co-created, and it felt like the answer to prayers I didn’t dare utter.

The freckles, the megawatt smile, the raw honesty, vulnerability, and most of all the joy she exudes have been a lifeline, especially during these dark days.

A cynic (and I am cynical at times) would say this is just a very talented actress playing a well-written role, and honestly that’s all anyone should ask of a TV show. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that I had stumbled upon someone rare and special.

When I saw her appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, it confirmed everything I had suspected. Listening to her talk about her family and career was truly inspirational, especially listening to her talk about Survival of the Thickest, which she calls education through love.

I’m a fiery Sagittarian and when my passion in the face of cruelty or injustice gets ignited, love tends to fly out the window and the flames can get out of control.

These days, I’m constantly reminding myself that fire should be a source of light, warmth, and creativity. It should not result in scorch marks. Out of control flames are not productive. With so much to get fired up about, that’s been a hard lesson to learn and follow but I’m determined to persevere.

There are so many battles to fight these days, and we need every weapon we can lay our hands on. Passion and determination are necessary tools but so are humor, kindness, joy, and empathy. All of us are capable of these things and we can and should surround ourselves with people who possess these traits. Michelle Buteau is living proof of this.

I hope this piece inspires you to watch my new favorite show and to inject Michelle Buteau’s message of love and inclusiveness into your life and the lives of those you encounter.

Thanks for reading.
